CA Bill Passes to Track State's Alternative Fuel Use

September 12, 2007

(Sacramento, CA) -- Seeking to reverse the state's decade-long trend of using standard gasoline in its alternative fuel fleet, the Legislature passed a bill Tuesday that would push the vehicles to run on the environmentally-friendly fuels they were designed to use.

If the bill becomes law, the Department of General Services, which is responsible for the state fleet, would be required to track the amount of fuel it uses by type in all of its vehicles. Currently, the state tallies the total amount of gasoline and alternative fuel it uses, but does not break down the green fuel consumption by type. The Legislature wants a transparent picture that will shows them what percentage of each green fuel is being used versus standard gasoline in the alternative fuel fleet.

Lieu's bill also will require General Services to identify and report the location of each alternative fuel vehicle, something it currently cannot do. And, it will also have to identify the location of alternative fuel pumps in California and bring the appropriate vehicles and fuel together.
